Kyosti Oikarinen received his DDS diploma at the University of Turku, Finland in 1978, his PhD from the University of Oulu, Finland in 1987 and his DMD degree

from the University of Hamburg, Germany in 1988. He completed his dental specialization in oral and maxillofacial surgery in 1984 and was appointed in a lectureship (docent) in 1991 at the University of Oulu. Professor Oikarinen has been teaching and practicing oral and maxillofacial surgery since graduation 1978, first as a resident and since 1984 as an assistant professor at the University of Oulu. In 1994 he was appointed as acting head and professor at the department of OMFS and was later invited to a tenure professorship at the University of Oulu. Professor Oikarinen is on leave from Finland and started as a professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery at Kuwait University in September 2000. Kyosti Oikarinen has participated in the activity of several scientific and professional organizations. Among other things he was the chairman of the Committee for Continuing Education of the Finnish Dental Society in 1995 and the president of the Scandinavian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in 1996-2000. He hosted the 29th congress of this association in Oulu in June 2000 and has given several lectures and courses on both national and international level. His main continuing education topics have concerned general oral and maxillofacial surgery, dental traumas and implantology. Professor Oikarinen has published two doctoral theses and 79 peer review articles in international journals. In addition to this he has published more than 50 other scientific articles, mostly in Finnish and 45 articles in newspapers, bulletins etc. He has 78 congress abstracts and he has supervised three doctoral theses. The main research subjects have concerned dental and maxillofacial traumatology e.g. etiology, diagnosis, treatment and late complications. Several publication have been dealing with the outcome of orthognathic treatment and TMJ surgery as well as indications for treatment and follow-up of dental implants. Oikarinen has for example introduced a novel type of dental splinting and a method for harvesting bone chips in reconstructive oral and maxillofacial surgery.
Oikarinen has received two teacher awards, one from the University of Oulu (Good Teacher-award 1991) and one from the Student Council at the Institute of Dentistry in Oulu (Teacher of the Year-award 1994).
